The twelve animals of the Chinese Zodiac

The Chinese Zodiac, known as Sheng Xiao, is based on a twelve-year cycle, each year in that cycle is related to an animal sign. It is believed that a special relationship exists between humans and the 12 zodiacal animals and that the years represented by the animals, affect the characters of people in the same manner as the sign of the zodiac adopted by Western civilisations. 


1900, 1912, 1924, 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008

The first sign of the Lunar calendar, the Rat is noted as being ambitious yet honest, charming and hard working. They are very generous with those that they love and seek satisfaction from acquiring possessions. Usually very successful, they are unafraid of risk and see the world as their playground.



1901, 1913, 1925, 1937, 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009

The Ox is known to be calm, honest, easy-going but sometimes stubborn with a flared-temper. The work methodically, sticking to routine and conventions. Bright, patient and inspiring to others, they make natural born leaders with the skill to in still confidence in others.

The Tiger symbolises power, passion and daring. A personality that is humanitarian yet rebellious, thoughtful yet aggressive and impatient yet sensitive. Tigers like to take risks, living a carefree life and can be unpredictable while otherwise charming, emotional and brave.

Considered very fortunate, the Rabbit is cautious and thoughtful which makes then financially lucky and successful in business. Being popular, Rabbits are friendly, affectionate, artistic and likely to possess good judgement. Their flaws being that they can be superficial, self-indulgent, detached and stubborn.

Dragons are enthusiastic and full of life, yet while they seem out-going, in reality they are tender-hearted. Dragons are constantly on the go, egotistical and eccentric, dogmatic, whimsical and demanding but never without a band of admirers. Dragons have a passionate nature and abundant health, displaying power and boundless energy.

Endowed with a personal wisdom, the Snake is the deepest thinker of the Zodiac. By nature the Snake is sceptical, relying on their own judgement and instincts and has the tendency to not work well with others. Snakes are witty, passionate, intense, cautious, analytical and introverted.

The kaleidoscope of the mind, unshackled by mundane holds, unchecked by sturdy, binding goals. The Horse is quick-witted, cheerful, agile, intelligent, open-minded, talkative and talented, positive and popular, but sometimes impatient. Horses often tend to consider themselves better that other and should pay attention to not becoming overly egoistic.

A special child of nature, the Goat strives for tranquility and harmony with nature. An elegant, compassionate and kind spirited being, the Goat is a problem solver, generous, gentle, calm, shy, creative and understanding with a sensitive side and the tendency to worry. The Goat has fantastic luck and fortune and has the ability to turn weakness into strength.

The genius of alacrity, wizard of the impossible, the Monkey is the sign of the inventor, improviser and motivator, capable of drawing everyone to him with guile and charm. No challenge is too great for the Monkey, as he is quick-witted, clever, flexible and innovative. They can solve intricate problems with ease and is a fast learner. Never lacking confidence, this mischievous, charming and sociable being is well liked by everyone.

The meticulous taskmaster, the ever-watchful administrator. I seek perfect order in my world. I represent unfailing dedication. Often the most misunderstood and eccentric of all the signs, the Rooster is a deep thinker, determined, conservative and talented. They have a hunger for knowledge, are enthusiastic about their work and are strong decision-makers. Sometimes eccentric and always interesting and brave. There are two rooster types, the rapid-firing, extremely talkative type, and the deadly somber observers.

The eleventh sign of the Lunar calendar, the Dog is the protector of Justice. Dogs are never blurred by cowardice and their souls are never chained and are firm believers in equality. They believe that life without honour is life in vain. Calm, intelligent, honest, generous, persistent, loyal and true to those they hold dear, dogs are good listeners, enthusiastic, but also cynical and they can easily be overcome by anxiety. Dogs are constant worriers, are sharp-tongued and successful people.

The Boar has the purest heart, bonded to all mankind by common fellowship, these peace-loving beings are honest, reliable, devoted, tolerant, shy, affectionate, kind and impulsive, but sometimes impatient and materialistic. Pigs make the perfect partners and are intellectual and very persistent when trying to reach a goal but can also be very naive. They have a hunger for knowledge that helps pave their way to success and can devote their entire lives to a good cause and will welcome a friend and their troubles with open arms.
